A New Digital Haven for Vintage Music Lovers: The Chess Records Tribute Channel
The world of vintage music has just become more accessible and vibrant with the launch of the Chess Records Tribute Channel on YouTube. Spearheaded by Marshall Chess, son of the legendary Chess Records co-founder Leonard Chess, along with his son Jamar and partner Richard Ganter, this channel serves as a treasure trove of rare and classic music clips spanning blues, jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, and gospel.
Marshall Chess, who has been a pioneering force in the music industry for decades, describes the Chess Records Tribute Channel as a "deep excursion into the vast Chess Records history." The channel features hundreds of rare videos, personal stories, and continuous content updates, making it an invaluable resource for music aficionados. One of the channel’s highlights is a podcast section where Marshall Chess shares Chess music interspersed with his insightful commentary. "If you love the blues, you have got to check out The Chess Records Tribute YouTube channel," he urges.
The new channel follows the success of "New Moves: The Chess Project," a groundbreaking album collection from Marshall's CZYZ Records label. The name CZYZ honors the original family name of his father and uncle before it was changed to "Chess" upon their arrival in the USA in the 1920s. This historical nod is a testament to the family's enduring influence on music history.
Marshall Chess's collaboration with longtime friend Richard Ganter has been instrumental in bringing the channel to life. Their partnership began in the mid-1990s with the promotion of the "Legendary Masters" series and evolved over the years into a deep friendship and creative partnership. Their shared passion for preserving the Chess family legacy led to the creation of the Chess Records Tribute Book, an illustrated coffee table-style photo book with a foreword by Marshall.
The Chess Records Tribute Channel was initially launched in July 2020 and fully unveiled in January 2024. It has since amassed over 500 videos, covering a wide range of genres and featuring unique playlists dedicated to key Chess artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson, Etta James, Little Walter, and Chuck Berry. The channel also offers special films and documentaries, including the re-colorized and digitized "Bo Diddley Legend" documentary produced by Marshall Chess.
One of the channel’s standout features is its exclusive content on "The Chess Project," a Grammy-nominated album produced by Marshall and Jamar Chess along with Keith LeBlanc. This album boasts an impressive lineup of artists such as Bernard Fowler, Keith LeBlanc, Skip "Little Axe" McDonald, Eric Gales, Paul Nowinski, MonoNeon, Reggie Griffin, Alan Glen, and Mohini Dey. The Chess Records Tribute Channel provides a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this album, showcasing the blend of hip-hop and classic blues influences.
Richard Ganter emphasizes the channel's unique offering: "The Chess Records Tribute channel pretty much evolved from launching the book and realizing the vast array of music and Marshall’s deep association with Chess. We quickly saw the potential to produce original and unique content not seen anywhere on YouTube."
The channel is a hub for music lovers to explore, featuring over 70 podcasts hosted by Marshall Chess himself, who shares his extraordinary experiences in the music industry. Additionally, the channel regularly posts short videos, community updates across social media platforms, and offers exclusive merchandise to help sustain its production costs.
With more specials planned for 2024 and 2025, including pod-style tidbits of Marshall Chess’s tales from the music business, the Chess Records Tribute Channel promises to be a continually evolving and enriching resource. Marshall Chess's unique broadcasting style and deep connection to the music will undoubtedly captivate audiences and keep the spirit of Chess Records alive for generations to come.
For those eager to dive into the rich legacy of Chess Records and beyond, the Chess Records Tribute Channel is a must-visit digital destination. Marty Stuart's Collection Finds a Home at the Country Music Hall of Fame
In a landmark event for country music enthusiasts and historians, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum has proudly welcomed the Marty Stuart Collection into its permanent collection. This monumental addition, celebrated on August 21, 2024, now positions the museum as the guardian of the largest private assemblage of country music artifacts in the world.
Marty Stuart, a revered figure in the country music world, has generously donated over 22,000 items spanning more than a century of the genre's rich history. His collection, which includes over 1,000 pieces of stage wear, 100 instruments, and 50 original song manuscripts, is now owned by the nonprofit museum and will be meticulously preserved for future generations. This acquisition was made possible by Stuart's philanthropy, along with significant contributions from the Willard & Pat Walker Charitable Foundation and major support from Loretta and Jeff Clarke.
The collection boasts artifacts from iconic Country Music Hall of Fame members such as Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Charley Pride, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, and many others. Stuart's personal contributions include his extensive collection of photographs, which have been showcased in various museums and publications.
A celebratory ceremony held at the museum's Ford Theater featured performances with historic instruments from Stuart's collection. Highlights included:
Chapel Hart's rendition of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," with Charlie Worsham playing Pops Staples' 1970 Fender Telecaster.
Vince Gill performing "Marty & Me" with George Jones' customized 1958 Martin D-28 guitar.
Chris Stapleton's version of "Why Me Lord," using Johnny Cash's Martin D-45 acoustic guitar, once owned by Hank Williams.
Marty Stuart closing the ceremony with "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down," accompanied by Shawn Camp on Lester Flatt's Martin D-28 guitar.
The event's backing band, the Earls of Leicester, featured prominent musicians including Mike Bub, Shawn Camp, Charlie Cushman, Jimmy Stewart, Johnny Warren, and Jeff White.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, lauded Stuart's lifelong dedication to preserving country music's heritage. He shared an inspiring essay written by an 11-year-old Stuart about his dreams of becoming a musician, highlighting how Stuart's ambitions have shaped his remarkable career and contributions to the museum.
"Today, Marty is making our dreams come true," said Young. "We're incredibly grateful for Marty's generosity and the vital support from the Walker Foundation and Loretta and Jeff Clarke. This collection not only enriches our holdings but also ensures that these treasures are preserved and shared with the world."
Many items from the Marty Stuart Collection will be displayed in the museum's permanent exhibition, Sing Me Back Home: Folk Roots to the Present. Additionally, the museum will collaborate with Marty Stuart's Congress of Country Music in Philadelphia, Mississippi, to exhibit items from the collection, providing educational and administrative support.
"This is a top of the world moment for me," Stuart expressed during the ceremony. "To have my collection live alongside the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's is monumental. Sharing this day with family and friends from Nashville and Mississippi is just the best."
The ceremony underscored the significance of preserving country music's legacy, with Mandy Macke of the Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation emphasizing the collection's importance.
"The Walker Foundation is honored to help make this dream a reality," said Macke. "The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is the ideal steward for this precious collection, ensuring each artifact's care and sharing its spirit with the world."

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Celebrates Legacy of Music’s Pioneers in 2024 Inductee Exhibit
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2024 Inductee Exhibit, now open in Cleveland, shines a spotlight on some of the most influential and trailblazing artists in music history, honoring those whose contributions helped shape the foundation of rock, soul, and blues. Among the standout honorees this year are John Mayall, Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Alexis Korner, and Big Mama Thornton—artists whose lasting impact on the industry paved the way for future generations.
While recent chart-toppers like Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, and Peter Frampton are part of the 2024 induction class, this year’s exhibit gives special recognition to those elder statesmen and women whose work transcended genres and time.
John Mayall: The Father of British Blues
Often referred to as “The Father of British Blues,” John Mayall's inclusion in the Hall is a tribute to his vast influence on the British blues scene, which gave rise to legendary acts like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Fleetwood, who got their start under Mayall’s tutelage. His enduring contributions to blues music remain central to his legacy, and visitors to the exhibit can explore his history through personal memorabilia that highlights his storied career.
Big Mama Thornton: The Original Voice of Rock & Blues
The induction of Big Mama Thornton brings long-overdue recognition to a powerhouse vocalist whose 1950s recordings of songs like "Hound Dog" (later famously covered by Elvis Presley) and "Ball and Chain" (made famous by Janis Joplin) helped shape the early sound of rock and blues. Her influence as a raw, soulful voice in American music is captured in the exhibit with rare artifacts from her career.
MC5: The Pioneers of Proto-Punk
MC5, the Detroit-based revolutionary rock band known for their incendiary performances and political edge, are also central to this year’s class. As pioneers of proto-punk, their aggressive sound and uncompromising stance laid the groundwork for the punk movement of the 1970s. Items from their explosive career, including stage-worn outfits and early recordings, give fans a glimpse into their radical spirit.
Dionne Warwick: The Queen of Pop-Soul
Dionne Warwick’s timeless voice and elegant artistry defined a generation of pop-soul music. With a career spanning over six decades, her collaborations with the legendary songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David produced iconic hits like “Walk on By” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” Warwick’s legacy as a chart-topping artist is celebrated with a collection of her stage costumes, awards, and other memorabilia.
Norman Whitfield: The Architect of Psychedelic Soul
The visionary songwriter and producer Norman Whitfield helped shape the sound of Motown with his innovative production work, particularly in creating the genre known as psychedelic soul. His collaborations with The Temptations, including hits like "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and "Cloud Nine," showcased his ability to push musical boundaries. His contribution to music history is immortalized in this year’s exhibit with rare artifacts from his production career.
Alexis Korner: The Grandfather of British Blues
Alexis Korner, often hailed as “The Grandfather of British Blues,” was instrumental in launching the careers of many of Britain’s rock icons. His influence stretched far and wide, from inspiring The Rolling Stones to mentoring artists like John Mayall and Eric Clapton. His legacy is preserved in this exhibit through personal artifacts, including rare photographs and memorabilia from his career.
Jimmy Buffett: The Island Life Icon
Jimmy Buffett, known for his laid-back "Gulf & Western" sound, has become a cultural icon through his unique blend of country, folk, rock, and Caribbean influences. His induction into the Hall solidifies his status as a beloved figure in American music. Fans can view items from his tropical-inspired career, including stage props and the famous Margaritaville guitar.
A Celebration of Legacy
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2024 Inductee Exhibit offers an opportunity to reflect on the profound influence of these musical pioneers. From the groundbreaking sounds of blues and soul to the proto-punk fury of MC5, this year’s exhibit highlights the diversity and richness of the artists who laid the groundwork for rock and roll’s evolution. Their legacies continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike.
For those looking to dive into the history and legacy of this year’s Inductees, the exhibit is open to the public, with highlights from the collection that showcase the deep and lasting impact these artists have had on the world of music.
